Is There Any Relation Between B12 Deficiency And High Triglycerides?

Hello. I am (I thought) a healthy 60-yr-old post-menopausal woman being treated for the last 40 yrs. for Hashimoto s thyroiditis who is a good weight at 105-8 lbs. at 4 10 and exercise 3 x week by swimming. My recent labwork has shown b12 deficiency (I have been eating primarily a vegetarian diet for the past 2-3 yrs.) so understand that this needs tx. I have been however taking a b-complex supplement including 50 mg. of several of the b vitamins including b12. I plan to start eating shellfish and other fish to raise my levels. However, I am concerned about my first-time-ever high triglyceride levels. I do not eat sugar or wheat flour and do not use alcohol at all. Is there some connection between b12 deficiency and the high triglycerides?

Hello! You sent a great deal of information with one simple question. No, there is no relationship directly between B12 and triglycerides.Recently we have seen a plethora of cases such as yours. We have also found that if the B12 is adequately treated (not from a multivitamin either) and folate (if low), a patient can avoid type 2 diabetes which is also associated with low B12/elevated lipids. Follow-up until parameters are normal

They ran a specific B12 test? Did they also run a folic acid test? I always recommend both at the same time because if you treat a B12 deficiency without testing for folic acid it can mask a folic acid deficiency.

I am happy to help answer this serious issue for you and to stress the importance of taking this seriously. Good luck and please feel free to visit me again! Kathryn Shattler, MS,RD
