Is There A Problem In Stool With Black Colour?

Hi, I am currently 31 weeks pregnant and when I do a number 2 it is now almost black in colour. I have recently started to take another brand of iron tablets as my iron is really low could this be the cause?? I am not constipated or anything.. Thank you

Hello and welcome,

The most likely cause of black stools are iron tablets.

Other reasons are bleeding in the upper part of the digestive system like an gastric ulcer. This usually causes pain and burning in stomach. If these symptoms are not there then the most likely reason is iron.

You may try to change the brand of iron or if there is any doubt a test for occult blood in stool will help rule out any source of bleeding and clear all doubts. So please discuss this with your doctor.
