Is There A Complete Cure For Hyperthyroidism?

Hi, I am Srushti G with age 28 Yrs. I have been detected hyperthoiridism last month. I am on medication of PTU 50mg tablet and Inderal 10mg tablet since then. I have read a lot of articles on internet regarding hyperthyroidism.

My readings for T3, T4 and TSH are

T3 : 4.88 pg/mL (Normal Range 2.30-4.20)

T4: 2.21 ng/dL (Normal Range 0.89-1.76)

TSH: 0.031 mIU/mL (Normal Range: 0.35-5.50)

Please tell me

1. If PTU 50mg is sufficient enough to bring Thyroid under control with above reading values? 2. What is the probable minimum and maximum time I will have to be on Thyroid medication? 3. I would like to have baby but not before my disease is cured. Is it possible for my thyroid disease to get completly cured? If not, what are the precaustion I must be taking before coceiving.

Welcome and thank you for your answer.
I have gone carefully through your concern.
You didn't mention your exact diagnosis but having into consideration your age the most probable cause of hyperthyroidism must be Graves' disease.
It is an autoimmune disease.

If you were a patient in my clinic i would recommend you methimazole rather than PTU. In your case a 6 months treatment would be enough to normalize the hormonal level, anyway it can not be decided prior.

The level of the antibodies would allow us to give you more information egarding to the outcome of the disease. The lower the antibodies, the lower the chances for relapse.

A definite treatment (thyroidectomy or radioactive iodine) is recommended when the disease relapses.

I would recommend not to try to conceive for at least 6 months.

Hope the information will help,

Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta
