I am a 54-year-old, postmenopausal woman.Almost a year ago I went to the emergency room after several days of passing water from my bowels with a small amount of blood. I was diagnosed with a colon infection and given antibiotics, with no further problems. A few months ago I had a less severe episode that went away without treatment. A recent FIT test revealed blood in my stool and my doctor ordered a colonoscopy, which led to a diagnosis of diverticulosis. I sometimes notice a very strong chemical odor with bowel movements, like ammonia or perm solution. Aside from all of this, for several months I have been drinking a lot of Red Bull every day. My daughter, who is in nursing school, became alarmed when she realized this and told me it could cause serious kidney problems. My urine smells different the past several months, but not like amonia. Is there any connection? Could any of these things cause the horrible stool odor?
