Hiya, my grandfather recently ended up in hospital and was told he had COPD but his own doctor disagrees with the diagnosis saying that it is to do with his leaky heart valve? He is very short of breath most of the time, he coughs up either yellow or white pleghm most of the day, is dizzy and unbalanced and gets an asthmay type breathing mainly in the morning. I have looked on internet but cant seem to find what the difference between his leaky heart valve and COPD. Thanks for your help
Hi welcome to HCM. There is no direct relationship between leaky valve and COPD.But a leaky valve can exacerbate the symptoms of COPD by causing increased blood pressure in the lungs by regurgitation of blood through the leaked valve. This can result in asthmatic symptoms and increased sputum production which can later get infected. Its extremely very important for the paravalvular leak to be repaired as delay in this can precipitate cardiorespiratory failure.Consult your cardiologist for further queries. Thank you
