Is The Consumption Of Diluted Dettol A Cause For Concern?
Five year old child accidentally got three drops of diluted dettol while washing hands. It spilled in his eyes. He was crying out of burning sensation. It was washed with plenty of water and now the kid is fine. Is an opthalmologist check up mandatory? Dear doctor please reply....
Dettol is an antiseptic and it is meant only for the external use. When consumed in its pure form, it has a corrosive action (due to its main ingredient chloroxylenol) which can cause irritation of the soft tissues of mouth, esophagus and stomach producing burning sensation in the mouth and heart burn.
Diluted Dettol can also cause harmful effects as described above but it depends upon how much of it is actually consumed and what is its dilution. As a first aid measure the eyes of the child have been washed with plenty of water however the child should be examined by an ophthalmologist for proper clinical evaluation to rule out any harmful effects on the eyes.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
