Is Swelling In The Jaw Caused By Injury A Cause For Concern?

My daughter fell on her bike yesterday and hit her chin and mouth on the ground. The swelling and cuts have begun to heal but her chin has some increased redness and swelling. Is this common 18 hours after the injury or should I be more concerned about her jaw? She has no difficulty eating, talking but her chin is still very sore and the swelling has increased since this morning.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

As per your complain swelling over chin along with increased soreness seems to be most probably due to inflammation of the soft tissues caused due to injury..

As she does not have any difficulty in eating, talking etc the chances of jaw bone fracture are less and seems to be soft tissue inflammation only..

I would still suggest you to consult an Oral Surgeon and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and x Ray can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly..

In case of soft tissue injury anti inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen, a short course of antibiotics to prevent infections and cool compresses will provide relief..

In case of bony fracture reduction and immobilization have to be done..

As of now you can give her Ibuprofen, do cool compresses and apply numbing gel containing Lignocaine to relieve pain..

Hope this helps..

Regards.
