Is Swallowing Of Tooth Abscess Drainage Safe?

Went to the dentist today and found out I have an abcessed tooth. Well, as I lay in bed trying to go to sleep I get a bad taste in my mouth I'm assuming is drainage from the abcess. I've been spitting it out but obviously I can't spit it out all night. Is it ok to swallow the drainage?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that there is pus formation below the root tips of the tooth leading to formation of dental abscess and bad taste in mouth seems to be due to pus draining sinus..
Continuous swallowing of the pus can lead to infection in stomach and can also lead to gag reflex but pus discharge from dental abscess is generally not in so much excess to cause any severe stomach infection..
You might also be taking antibiotics for tooth abscess that will further help you to prevent infection..
You should also get the treatment of the tooth done as the dental abscess will not relieved completely with antbiotics alone and you need to consult an Endodontist, get an x ray of the tooth done and he can advise you a Root Canal Treatment if the tooth can be saved..
In case if decay is extensive, extraction is advisable..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
