Is Swallowing A Staple Pin By A Toddler A Cause For Concern?

Hello sir/madam I am a mother of a 2yrs old daughter.Yesterday my daughter was playing with a new pack of English alphabets which was stapled and after sometime she got bored and threw it on the bed and ran away. And later on at night I found one staple was missing from the pack & an alphabet was out of the pack. That time I didn t notice it seriously.Thought it might be mishandled by someone.Today again I took the packet and made her sit down to learn them & suddenly I got a phone call.I was busy attending the call that she felt like vomiting. At that time I thought she might have swallowed something.I repeatedly asked her what she has swallowed.I put my fingers in her mouth but nothing was there. She was then relaxed but I was frightened.I asked her showing another pin if she has took it to her mouth but she replied , no . I know I m sounding very much like a fickle minded lady and I m sorry for being so but pls at this moment I need your help.Im in a doubt has she swallowed a staple pin from the packet if she has found it somewhere being thrown and not wiped out bimistakely. mistakely.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

If you suspect that your daughter has swallowed a staple pin, probably she will expel it out by stool. Rarely might happen to cause any bleeding or any inflammation and scarring through the digestive tract. I suggest you to give her food high in fiber and banana to make it more easy to expel it out.

You should also observe her. If you notice her to be irritable, to have any signs of pain or if you see blood in her stool, then you should take her to the Emergency Room to get checked by a doctor and to perform X-ray to see if there is any pin and to find location.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Regards,
