Is Surgery Required For Broken Bone In Left Foot?

my wife had an accident at gym and the x-ray taken today shows that she has a irregular broken bone of one of the small bones at her left foot. She is afraid of having a pulmonary emboli (she had a bad experience after her meniscus surgery a couple of years ago). If a sugary is necessary and there is the risk of pulmonary emboli again, can she or how can she travel overseas to our country. Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Broken small bones of the foot doesn't generally require surgery and can be managed by putting a cast and immobilizing the joints of the foot for 4 to 6 weeks.
However, depending on the site and extent of injury, it may require surgery also. There is no need to worry about pulmonary embolism as it is more common with long bone fracture and not with small bone fractures.
Kindly consult Orthopedic Surgeon in this regard and get her evaluated so that proper treatment can be instituted.
Do not make any delay or neglect as the bones may unite and form mal-union, which would make ambulation much difficult later on.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
