Is Surgery Best Option For 79 Year Old Suffering From Hiatal Hernia?

I am 79 years old female and on a blood thinner I have a hiatal hernia and am worried about having troubles with it later. Would you recommend surgery? What about laser? I have a keloid scar from a gaul bladder operation and I think that caused the hernia thank you

Hi,

I can understand your concerns as you are 79 years old.
With the advent of safe anesthesia and newer techniques including laparoscopic surgeries, age is no bar for most of the surgeries provided you are fit for anesthesia and surgical stress.
Sine you are on blood thinner means there is some medical problem which needs to be addressed well as a plan for surgery.
Another point in Hiatal Hernia is the symptomatology. IF this is an incidental finding nothing needs to be done.
If this is causing symptoms then only you have to undergo surgery.
Consult your Gastroenterology Surgeon for opinion as to the need and if yes then what type of surgery and the possible outcome before you go ahead with surgery.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant, General Surgeon
