Hi Doctor, I am a 23 year old female, I am single not married yet, In the days of my menus it pains a lot in my abdomen the same pain is felt in the other days too and few days back when consulted a doctor she did scanning and said me that I have an ovarian cyst. She also said that this is normal is females but it pain a lot, should I get the surgery done to remove the cyst or let it be as it is? In future will this effect my married life? Will I get pregnant or not after the surgery? Kindly advice?
Hello and welcome to HCM, Ovarian cyst can cause abdominal pain and menstrual abnormalities. Whether surgical removal of ovarian cyst is required or not depends on size of cyst and internal characteristics of the cyst seen on ultrasound. If the cyst is small and not associated with solid areas or papillae formation, surgical excision is not required. However, the cyst may be closely followed up by regular ultrasonography of pelvis to look for any increase in size of the cyst or development of any solid area or papillary excrescence.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
