Is stopping Sertraline, Buspirone and Clonazepam before taking Tylenol the right thing to do?

Qi was prescribed Tylenol 4 for gall bladder pain, I currently take Sertraline, buspirone, and Clonazepam, but have stopped taking them because I was afraid of interactions. I am having gall bladder surgery tomorrow, and will probably be given pain pills. Was I right in stopping my other medications?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Some of these drugs may indeed interact with opioids, which are commonly used drugs after surgery. Although the risk for these interactions is not very high, most doctors would have discontinued the medications except Clonazepam. The best thing would have been to let your doctor take that decision for you.

Tylenol-4 contains Codeine, which is an opioid and you'll probably need even more potent opioids after the procedure.

I hope you find my comments helpful! Best wishes for your surgery!

Last thursday i was eating and the back half of one of my jaw teeth broke off, i ve had this tooth filled for about 35 years, the feeling appears to be still in tack, but it became extremely sensitive for a couple of days an then stopped. saturday it started bothering me again with severe pain so i took six tylenol and four full strength aspirin, and that stopped the pain for about five hours so i took the same amount again and throughout the night, come sunday my lower jaw and part of my neck was swollen and i had severe pail, so i went to the emergency room, they done some blood work, gave me a MRI and a shot of 4 morphine, that did not have any effect, so they gave me 2 dililaded and that just took the edge off. The results of my labs showed a elevation in white blood cells, so they sai i had an abscess and gave me a bolis of clindamycin and a 2two prescriptions of clindamycin 300mg 30 caps to take every eight hours, and norco 5/325 to take ever four hours for pain. So when i got home i started taking the meds right away, The pain medicine does not help at all so i am still taking 6 to8 tylenol and 5 to 6 aspiren every 5 to 6 hrs. I need to know how long before the antibiotic works it s been 3 days and the swelling has gotten worse, it has got the whole side of my face swollen all the way up to the bottom of my ear, i cand stand to touch because of the pain and a couple of times i ve taken the 7 to 8 tylenol i started taking 6 ibuprofen i had to through up. so i need to know i should do. My mouth want open only about half an inch and i have to put each pill in there one at a time a use a straw to drink water, when i try to open my mouth it s very painful in my jaw. jeff
