Is Spotting And Frequent Urination Sign Of Pregnancy?

Hello, Ive been quite worried this last couple of weeks. About a month ago me and my boyfriend has unprotected sex, I took the morning after pill. I visited my GP because I was worried about the situation, she said wait until my placebo week of microgynon 30 (the pill i went on a day before unprotected sex) to see if i had a withdrawel bleed, I did have a withdrawel bleed for 5 days almost identical to a normal period, maybe a little lighter, I also took a pregnancy test due to worry, came out neg. But the past week ive been needing to urinate more, and breasts feel abit sore. Im not sure weather this is anxiety about pregnancy or what? please can you help!

Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

If you got bleeding after your unprotected encounter, and took emergency contraception, and had a negative pregnancy test, you are not pregnant. Furthermore, the hormones in the birth control pills are what made your period shorter this month, which is a normal side-effect.

Many of the side effects of birth control pills can also mimic pregnancy symptoms. So it is not unusual to have bloating, breast tenderness, and other symptoms women commonly associate with pregnancy, especially in the first month of being on the pill. Worrying about pregnancy also makes you notice certain symptoms that you may not have been paying attention to as much previously.

So you do not need to worry about pregnancy as long as your pregnancy test was negative, and you are taking birth control pills.

Your symptoms especially of breast tenderness generally get better after you have been on the birth control pills for at least 3 months. Cutting down on caffeine and salt in your last week of your pill pack can help to reduce these side effects.

I hope I was able to adequately answer your question today and that this information was reassuring.

Best wishes,

Dr. Brown
