Is Sleeplessness An Early Sign Of Menopause?

Hi through the night in about a month. My girlfriends joke with me that it is probably signs of early menopause, however, why can it not just be stress related? How do I no for sure? I have no other signs or issues going on. I just have the day to day grind of stress from work...but so does everyone. I have tried taking melatonin- 3 mg, it has not helped. I never been one that required a lot of sleep, but I do miss not sleeping through the night. Thank you-Cathy

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

In perimenopausal state some amount of agitation, sleeplessness and hot flashes can be seen. To be sure, you can go for investigations like serum FSH levels, if it is consistently elevated above 30mIU/ml and if in ultrasound if the endometrial thickness is less that is around 4mm, there is possibility that you are nearing menopause. In that case supplementing hormones in low dose may help in decreasing the problem.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
