Is severe pain around the umbilical area a symptom of hernia?

hi am 25 year old female & i had an umbilical hernia operation at 13 years ago, however am scared to get pregnant as i fear it may relapse the hernia. also i get a strong pain for a short time in the umbilical cord when its very cold, is this also related to the hernia?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

* As per my surgical experience, the pain around umbilical area does not necessarily indicate hernia presence.
* And the fear to get pregnant is also irrelevant.
* Kindly take an ultrasound report of the abdomen & pelvis to find out the underlying cause and manage accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I understand your problem but the chances that the umbilical hernia relapse are very low if the operation was done in the right way. I will suggest to have a ultrasonography of the abdomen to be sure that everything is ok with your umbilical hernia and not to worry anymore about it.

I had a tummy tuck done approx.4 1/2 yrs. ago n about 1yr ago I went to a doctor to have a umbilical hernia repaired, i told him I was having pain in my groin on the RT.side.He said go back to my plastic surgeon,he said it looks like he left a stitch in. Im waiting to get insurance n then I will go back to him.i have been getting worse with my pain and posture. Is this a normal side effect from leaving a stitch in or could this be from the mesh behind the umbilical repair.i have to use a shopping cart to walk around in the stores,i can hardly lift anything. I have extreme lower back pain.

I am 47 old woman, obese, and have had umbilical hernia since my last pregnancy 14 years ago. It was alright, but lately, it became problematic and since yesterday, the area has been very painful, tender and now I have severe pain specially when I move which is around my navel and and under it. When I lie down, my abdomen is flat, no umbilical (hole). I am worried what is wrong with it. There is nothing protruding from it though.
