Hello doctor! My son 4 years old hit on cheeks while playing that caused bleeding and pus from the gum on the affected side. Bleeding stopped after few minutes we went to doctor gave antibiotic and anti inflammation medicine for 5 days.. no pain he is normal but still some times we can find pus from his gums. One pediatric dentist said he had cavity on the molar and asked to doroot canal .. is root canal really necessary??

Hi,

Pus from the gums is commonly an indication of infection. However at times it is also an indication of healing process by the body in the area of any injury. So in case if your child has got hit on the cheek and then there is pus discharge observed then it can be a sign that body is trying to heal the area and avoid bacterial infection in the area of injury.

On the other hand, root canal treatment is commonly done if the tooth is infected and the infection or decay has reached the nerves deep into tooth. Other indication can be if the tooth gets injured and the injury reaches periapical area that is under the tooth root.

So if the molar tooth is decayed causing pus then root canal is needed. First of all get an X-ray done and send it to me so that I can advise you appropriately. As of now you can start with antibiotics and warm saline gargles after consulting a pediatric dentist.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
