Is Regular Menstrual Cycle Normal In A 56 Year Old Woman?

I m a 56 year old woman that is still have regular menstrual cycles. I have always been right on time and 5-7 days of my cycle. Now I m anywhere from 2-3 days to my current record of 21 days and counting. My flow can go from very light to beyond controllable levels where I can go through a super tampon in less than an hour. My doctor explained recently that this is the beginning of menopause, but I am concerned that I may have a more serious issue brewing.

Hi,
Thanks for asking.
1. Yes, it could be normal.
2. No, if it was abnormal and not related to menopause, it would have thought of a serious issue.
3. Your ovaries are functioning well, so not to worry.

Hope it helps.
