Is Recurrence Of Breast Cancer Possible After A Lumpectomy?
Hi My name is Sharon I am a retired Registered Nurse due to Multiple Sclerosis when I was 49 Yrs old. I was diagnosed with stage 1 Invasive Ductal Carcinoma Right breast in 2014...had a lumpectomy, 8 Chemo treatments & 33 Radiation tx.... of course, I had to stop my MS medication at the time as well as the Letrozole. Not even 3 years later diagnosed with stage 2 IDC oncce again in the same breast...both times I wanted Both breasts removed....she would not do it. But the second time I did have a Mastectomy on the Right Breast. Once again I had to stop my Multiple Sclerosis medication. I just today started taking Exemestane 25 mg daily... no insert came with the medication from the mail order pharmacy though. I don t know what this outcome will be this time around but I am not too confident whatsoever. I had 16 Chemo treatments..the worst time of my entire life. Chemo ended finally on 8/1/2017.. If by chance the cancer returns I am NOT treating it again....I am done!! Hopefully, by November I can restart some MS medication as I do believe it had progressed. What are my chances of the breast cancer returning or of another metastatic cancer occurring at this point? Also how is all this playing in with my MS? And what are the benefits and risks of this new medication? And please fill me in on the side effects...thanks....
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Lumpectomy always go a chance for recurrence as we remove only the tumor. As you have removed the entire breast and already took chemo, the chances for recurrence is is unlikely. You can go for a PET scan to look for any undetected mets somewhere in your body.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
