Is Rapid Growth In The Size Of Breasts During Puberty A Cause For Concern?

Hi. My daughter with down syndrome is almost 13. She has not started her period yet. but, she does have lots of other signs of puberty. She has developed body hair under her arms and pubic hair. She has had this for well over a year. My concern is her breast development. While one is growing quite a bit. At least one bra size bigger than the other one which has had hardly any growth if at all. Should I be concerned about this? Thank you.

Hello and welcome to HCM,
There may be disturbance in sexual development in patients of Down syndrome.
Overgrowth of one breast more than the other is of concern.
There may be hyperplasia of one of the breasts.
I suggest you to consult an endocrinologist for clinical assessment of the breasts.
An ultrasound of the breasts may also be required to assess the breast parenchyma.
If the breast enlargement turns out to be due to breast hyperplasia, surgical correction of the breast may be required.

Thanks and take are
