There are many different things that can cause a high pulse rate. The correct treatment depends on what is causing the problem. In certain cases, radiofrequency ablation may be the best therapy. It can permanently eliminate the cause of the rapid pulse. For certain arrhythmias, drugs can also be used. They would take longer to work and then there are side effects to worry about. If your father has atrial fibrillation and his cardiologists think he's a good candidate for RFA, I would go ahead with it. It can be treated with drugs, but he would need a blood thinner along with other drugs to control the rate. These have potentially severe side effects, so if he can have a treatment that cures it so he doesn't need the drugs, that would be best. If the high rate is from atrial fibrillation, then his risk for stroke is greatly increased and this could lead to paralysis. I would call this situation urgent- it should be handled promptly one way or another. Hope this helps.
