Is Radiation Therapy A Good Option For Brain Tumor?

Hi, I wanted to know if radiation therapy a good option for brain tumor? My mother had her brain tumor surgery for the first time in 2006 then again it was detected last year and got operated in may 2015. In dec, 2015, again a small legion was detected and the doctor said that they legion was left out as the tumor was deep seeded. My mother is 70 years old. Is it safe to undergo radiation therapy as this age?

Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

I carefully passed through your question and would explain that the benefits of radiation therapy depend on the type of the tumor (biopsy results).

From the other hand, in this clinical situation, if the tumor is sensitive to radiation therapy and she has undergone surgery twice, she can benefit from fractionated radiotherapy.

There are many options of localized radiotherapy like gama-knife, which are helpful in this clinical situation, without the adverse effects of total brain radiation.

You should discuss with a neuro-oncologist or radiologist on the above issues.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
