Is Rabies Vaccination Required After Being Bitten By A Dog?

I was bitten at the bottom of the thumb (near my wrist) by my old Chihuahua, while trying to clip his nails. It broke the skin a bit, but 3-4 days after, now it is bruising. It doesn t hurt at all and it isn t swelling, but I was wondering if I should be concerned. Thank you!

Hi,

I would suggest you to get vaccinated with rabies vaccine to be on the safer side. Anti-rabies vaccine are administered on the 0, 3, 7, 14 and 28 days of a bite. As per the latest recommendations, anyone who has a pre or post exposure prophylaxis of rabies vaccine and is re-exposed, need not take any boosters if the repeat exposure occurs within three months of previous vaccination. If three months have elapsed, then you need to take two boosters at day 0 and day 3.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General & Family Physician
