Is Prolonged Usage Of Rozavel Advisable For A Person With High LDL?

I have been taking Rozavel 10 for the last 4 years. I am 57 year old female. When I first got my cholesterol level checked in 2012 my LDL was 109 where below 120 was considered normal level. In spite of that my cardiologist asked me to take Rozavel stating that LDL below 100 is considered normal. The Dr. Said since my mother died of a heart attack and due to genetic reasons I needed to take the medication. So I have been taking it since then. My first question is that recently Drs are saying these drugs cause cancer and hence should be avoided and that LDL of even 140 is okay. Can I stop taking my medicines without consulting a Dr. If I stop taking them now will my LDL level shoot up to much higher than what it was? Second question is are Simvastatin 10 mg and Rozavel 10 the same ( is the composition the same ). I would really be happy if you could answer both the questions. I am so confused. I do not want to land up getting cancer by taking these cholesterol reducing tablets especially since my LDL was only 109 and triglycerides and HDL are within normal range. PLEASE ADVISE. Thanks Kumud.

Hello, firstly I will answer your second doubt simvastatin and rozavel belong to same group of drugs called statin which try to decrease LDL cholesterol. simvastatin has some extra effects which rozavel doesn't have like NO donating property.
Secondly, the indications for starting statin are clear now a days. if you have diabetes and age less than 65, station need s to be started if cholesterol is in the range of 70-150. if u don't have any comorbidity( diabetes , hypertension, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease like heart attack or stroke) LDL >190 needs treatment.
if only hypertension LDL> 100 needs treatment.
if diabetes and hypertension together > 70 needs treatment. this is from mainly ATP 3 AND AHA recommendations. there is ASCVD risk calculator, if risk is more than 7.5 we need to start meds.
we have seen many patients using stations lifelong with minimal side effects in view of risk benefit ratio. there are some reports suggesting increased risk of diabetes with statins but in view of risk benefit ratio we Ned to continue them.
I suppose from question that you are nil premorbid , 57 yr female then its better to repeat fasting lipid profile and have ECG, TMT once based on all these reports we can decide further management.
