Is Pricking Method Conclusive For Blood Sugar Test?

Hi, may I answer your health queries right now ? Please type your query here... Hello Doctor, My age is 28 ,got married one year back. Yesterday i went to a hospital for a blood checkup to know whether I have sugar as i had the syptoms of that.And they said it is 178mg/dl which is above the limit (80-160). this test ws done thru Pricking method. Kindly let me know whether i can take this as a final one and conclude that I have sugar or do i need to check again in fasting??

Hello there,
I can understand that you are concerned about your sugar report. By pricking method do you mean glucometer then no its not ideal method for diagnosis of diabetes. To diagnose diabetes you should undergo an OGTT (Oral glucose tolerance test) in which they wil check fasting glucose and 2 hours after drinking glucose water. If fasting is more than 125 or after glucose drink if sugar is more than 200 then it is diagnosed as diabetes.
Glucometer can be used to check sugars in those already with diabetes who need to know control.
So get OGTT and HbA1c which is average sugar of 3 months. If that is more than 6.4 then its another way to diagnose diabetes.
