Is Pregnancy Safe For A Woman With Degenerative Disc Disease?

I had an accident at work about 3 years ago resulting in a loss of spinal fluid in my L5-S1 as well as a herniated disc that was bulging out backward and caused severe sciatica. I also have degenerative disc disease, arthritis, and radiculopathy. A little over a year ago I had a laminotomy and discectomy done on my L5-S1 which relieved some pain, but I m curious if these issues can prevent me from carrying a child or if it is okay to proceed?

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

These issues will not prevent you from conceiving or carrying a baby to term but may mean that you would experienced severe back pain during pregnancy.

Pregnancy is normally associated with back pain due to the pressure of the enlarged uterus on the back and the stretch of various ligaments. The ligament stretch occurs to help facilitate delivery.

Medications that you can use to help with pain management would be limited to prevent harm to the baby.

I hope this helps
