Is Pregnancy Possible While On Birth Control Pills?

Hi. I m 19 and I ve been taking birth control for many months. Recently I messed up and missed two days and by he third day I was bleeding. I called my Gyno and she said that it was breakaway blood and that I should keep taking my bc as normal but warned me to use another form of birth control as my bc would be ineffective for the rest of this month. Then I had sex with my boyfriend and the condom broke. Immediately we went to the store and got a levonorgestrel 1.5mg pill (Take Action) and I took it within an hour of this happening. The timeline is what gives me concern. I missed the two bc pills on Friday and Saturday going into my third week on my regular pill. On Sunday, which would start the last week of my regular pill (day 15). To my knowledge, from day 14 to the start of my period is when I am an supposed to ovulate. The condom broke on Thursday night which is 3 days before I m supposed to start my period/sugar week on my bc. What I am most concerned about is if the emergency contraceptive is in anyway effective due to the nearness to my period and with the likelihood of my having already ovulated? I did a significant amount of research with many mixed responses but the basic theme is that the ec pill is only effective before ovulation. That then pisses me off knowing that there is no warning on the box to say don t drop $50 if you already ovulated because you ll be spending a lot more later in because this pill doesn t work.

Hi,

Although this is not very likely. It is, however, possible that pregnancy occurs so you had one risky intercourse and if this happened during your ovulation period it is possible that pregnancy occurs, but considering your description of it, this risk is minor.

To be sure you should do pregnancy test which can be done when period is missed or 8 days after the targeted intercourse so at this point it would be accurate enough to detect possible pregnancy.

A standard urine test would be enough for it since this is almost 99% accurate.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
