Is Pregnancy Possible In Women With Irregular Periods And PCOs?

Hi doctor.. I have a history of irregular periods with PCOS . I have got my first cycle at the age of 13 and the irregularity was from the beginning . I am 29 now and got married 5 months ago, so far I have seen regular and proper 5 day bleeding periods with out any medicine for about 4 months sometime in 2013. Now that I am 29 and having the history I do not want to delay pregnancy. I also have a congenitally smaller left kidney with high blood pressure recorded at the age 16. Now my hypertension is under normal conditions and I do not take any medicine for it. I have consulted a Gyne & Obstrician who suggested me with APCOD OBIS and METFORMIN. I have huge hair loss , facial hair and weight gain ( even with regular physical activity). I used to get my periods for every six months may be and the bleeding continues till I take a medicine to stop it. Now I get my periods for every 4 months and yes the flow doesnot stop with out the medicine. I have tried alopathy for a very long time and seen many sideeffects than a positive help, later I shifted to Homeopathy which did not help me either. Could you please explain me is this a very rare or strange behaviour , is it really cumbersome for a pregnancy ? I am confused and irriated with all the things the happened. Sometimes I loose the hope that my periods will never get regularised in my life and thats when I have stopped all the medicines and closed the kit. Now that I got married and want to start a family. Please suggest me what to do.

Hi,

Polycystic Ovarian syndrome hormonal disorder seen in the women who are in the reproductive age. PCOS is identified by irregular periods and may be associated with heavy bleeding. Since there is hormonal imbalance, ovulation is not proper which results in poor rate of conception. Insulin resistance along with increased androgen level disturbs the normal physiology of the menstrual cycles.

Your gynecologist may advised you to lose weight and to maintain healthy diet and lifestyle. Oral contraceptive pills may prescribed to regularize your cycles. Anxiety and depression are also the symptoms of PCOS. On following all the measures, your cycles may become proper and you too can carry the child.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pradeepraj, General & Family Physician
