Is Pneumonia Contagious?

Hi my name is Darlene,my question is that my sister just got out of the hospital this afternoon she had pneumonia in left lung and right lung about three weeks ago ,when she went to her dr. 11-18-16 she told her she had pneumonia in her right lung but did not suggest that she go to the hospital but she was so sick ,my husband and I insisted she go ,she could hardly get a breath wasnt eating at all and iwas wondering if you could get pneumonia from her?

Hi,

Pneumonia can be of different types. most commonly it arises as a complication of viral/bacterial respiratory tract infection. You can get similar infection by coming in contact with respiratory secretions of person currently infected.

However you may not develop pneumonia from being infected. So in simple words, being in contact with someone with pneumonia does not spread pneumonia, it spreads that infectious organism that can cause respiratory tract infection, and pneumonia in some people as a complication.
