Is Pms-nortriptyline A Muscle Relaxant?

I went to see my doctor about aches & pains in my back (I m 63 yrs old). He prescribed pms-nortriptyline saying it was a muscle relaxant & the pharmacist told me it was for pain & the internet tells me it is for depression - I am not depressed & am confused as to why the dr. prescribed this???? Thanks, Linda

Hi Linda!
I had gone through your query and understand your concern.

Nortriptyline belongs to the group of medications known as tricyclic antidepressants (it isn't a muscle relaxant).
It is used to treat some medical conditions such as :depressive illness, noctural enuresis in children and neuropathic pain (unlicensed use).
Non-FDA approved (off-label) use of nortriptyline is as adjunctive therapy (added to other therapy) for chronic pain and neuropathic pain (for example, migraine, tension headaches, diabetic neuropathy, cancer pain, arthritic pain).

I think that your doctor has considered your back pain as neuropathic pain and prescribed you this drug to treat it.

Hope it answered to your inquiry!
If you have more questions feel free to write me back.

Take care.
