Is Persistent Cough A Symptom Of Bronchiectasis?

Please help me. I have had a cronic cough for 22 years .I am now very depressed. I have spent some years attending the Bromptom Hospital and nothing was found to give me a positive cause . Several possibilities were suggested ,including postnasal drip, damage to the vasal vagus nerve,(can t spell it} bronchiectusis, and various allergies. The only medicine prescribed with any success has been Codeine. When I was 70 years ,I was told younger people needed to be seen . I was given Codeine 30 mg tds and discharged . I then carried on with the G.P. Codeine eventually made me so tired I couldn t function properly , driving was most difficult as I was tired all the time. The G.P then referred me to the local hospital . Following several appointments , Reflux disease was diagnosed. I have been prescribed several different medicines . Nothing has worked .I am now taking Esomeprazole 40 mg twice daily and Ranitadine 300mg nocte . The course lasts eight weeks. I have completed 6 weeks and I am still coughing constantly . My heart beat is irregular and I have had an e.c.g. done . Bronchectisis has been diagnosed . Could that be the cause? Please have you any suggestions? You are my last resort . Gay Jenner

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

It is difficult to comment on the cause without a direct examination and seeing all the reports. Bronchiectasis usually causes chesty cough with thick and copious amount of purulent sputum, especially on getting up in the morning. The diagnosis will be obvious in chest X-ray and HRTC scanning, which will show abnormally thickened and dilated bronchial walls. And usually this happens secondary to other diseases like cystic fibrosis, respiratory epithelial dysfunction (ciliary dyskinesia) or poorly treated chronic bronchitis. Kindly discuss with a chest physician.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
