Is Palpitation A Side Effect Of Pacemaker Implantation?

I had a pacemaker put in a year ago and since then I have been having racing heart quite a lot. I have noticed lately that I seem to have some difficulty swallowing and then it starts other times the swallowing is not an issue but the racing sometimes lasts quite awhile.

Hello,

Thank you for your question. Pacemaker is a device that site under the skin near a person's heart. Pacemaker can treat abnormal heart rate.

A pacemaker sends electrical signal to the heart. These signals cause the heart to beat at a normal rate. Pacemakers are used to treat a heart rate that is too slow. A person might need a pacemaker if he or she has an abnormally slow heart rate and has symptoms. Those symptoms can be include fainting, feeling dizzy or light-headed, feeling your heart pounding, feeling confused or more tired than usual, trouble breathing. Pacemakers can work different ways. A pacemaker can send electrical signals all of the time or some of the time. Some pacemakers send electrical signals at a steady rate all of the time. Others send electrical signals only when a person's heart rate is too slow or too fast.. It can send electrical signals to one or more parts of the heart.

After you get a pacemaker , you will need a follow up with your doctor on a regular basis. He or she might do a test called an electrocardiogram (ECG). An ECG measures the electrical activity in the heart. Your doctor will also check to make sure that your pacemaker is working right way. Some people might need to have the pulse generator part of their pacemaker replaced in the future. This is because the battery in the pulse generator usually last 8 to 10 years. Wires do not usually need to be replaced.

Side effect of pacemaker such pain, angina pain, chest pain, dizziness, eating disorder or fainting. Some patients experience palpitations, near syncope, and syncope after pacemaker implantation. In these patients it is very useful to correlate symptoms with arrhythmias and no confirm that their implanted device is working appropriately and is programmed optimally.

Palpitation are maybe nothing but a perception of one's heart beat. It may be due to irregular rhythm of the heart and sometimes with the normal rhythm of the heart as well. Pacemaker does not control palpitations and irregular beat. One may still get palpitations if the heart beats are fast. If you are getting frequent palpitations, you must have a holter test performed. If there are fast and irregular rhythms of the hearts, then they should be managed with medicines.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Best regards,
Dr. Heang Chan Raksmey, General and Family Physiciam.
