Hi Katrina. Ovarian cancer definitely has a hereditary component and a percentage of all ovarian cancers are passed on from mother to daughter. However this forms only a small percentage of all ovarian cancers. But with a strong family history such as yours, no ovarian cyst can be left to chance and needs thourogh investigations to rule out cancer. You should get a blood test called CA125 done and if it is elevated then take it as cancer and undergo necessary surgery. If it is normal, then also you should undergo removal of the cyst with testing and based on the biopsy report to proceed further.
