Is Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH) Associated With Elevated Bilirubin And Loss Of Taste?

I run a low grade temperature most of the time. I have chills. I am fatigued most all the time. My tastes have changed so that now I can only detect sweet, bitter, salty, or sour. I can no longer taste flavors such as a good steak, pasta, etc. I have been diagnosed with NASH, and had colon cancer surgery in January 2017 in which the doctor removed 2 feet of my colon. My last blood tests showed my Bilirubin was elevated. What is your opinion?

Hi,

In non-alcoholic steatohepatitis diagnosed by ultrasound with fatty infiltration and biopsy says ballooning degeneration with inflammation and elevated liver enzymes.

Bilirubin may or may not elevated in NASH. It may be due to hemolysis or hypersplenism or hepatitis or obstruction etc.

So please get it done total or direct bilirubin, urine bilirubin level, liver biopsy, serum LDH, reticulocyte count, peripheral smear and vitamin B12 level and iron status.

Please consult your physician, he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Penchila Prasad Kandikattu,
