Is Neck Pain A Matter Of Concern?

Hi, I have been having neck pain for about two weeks. It seems to have began with too much reading and too much time on the computer...plus maybe working on flower beds. I am 81 years old. It is relieved with Tylenol every 10 to twelve hours and heating pads. But I am concerned with how serious it might be. Generally if I get a stiff neck it goes away within a few days.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You might be experiencing neck pain due to stress while working on computers for a longer duration. You can overcome it by doing the following:
1. Application of local analgesic gel over the affected area as thin layer at bedtime. Do not massage following application.
2. Use hot water bags when necessary.
3. Practice neck muscle relaxing and strengthening exercises regularly.
4. Use thin pillow while sleeping.
5. Take adequate breaks while sitting and working for longer duration.
6. Consult orthopedician and use cervical collar if advised to do so.

Hope the information provided helps.
All the best.
Regards,
Dr.Ashakiran.S.
