I have a SEPARATED NAIL FROM THE NAILBED.... there has been no injury to the nail. This is the third time it s happened in the last 3 years. Each time the nail loosens at the base and a new one grows in as the old one eventually falls off. I ve been on synthroid for my thyroid for about 10 years and I ve had blood work which shows medication is adequate dose. I ve read the nail condition can be a sign of thyroid trouble, but mine should be under control. Should I worry about this?
Welcome to Health care magic. Thank you for posting your question.
I can understand your concern. This separation of nail plate from the nail bed can occur in many conditions.
I will give you clues to pick up
1. Psoriasis - look for scaly lesions in your knees or elbows or pitting in the nails only 2. Lichen planus - Do you have any oral lesions? 3. Fungal infection - Is there a yellow discolouration? There are many more . Thyroid dysfunction can also cause onycholysis (separation of nail plate from its bed ) but rarely
I would suggest you to visit a dermatologist and get this checked. Do not worry.
Post any other question. We will be happy to help. Have a nice day. Regards.
