General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, Thanks for the query. I understand your concern. Mitral valve prolapse can be familiar. But according to Mendle's law of inheritance... if only one parent has family history- there are 50% of chances of inheriting it for their children . So Don't be tense ..you may escape it . - Still it's always better to be on watch, get yearly cardiac check up by an expert heart specialist... to exclude / note possible signs not notable personally. - Urgent consultation is demand with symptoms like- - Irregular heart beats - Light hotheadedness ( your brother needs such check up, as he goes blank in between ) -shortness of breath.. specially while lying flat in bed / during exercises - Chest pain .. which is confirmed not to be due to heart attack. Early diagnosis & prompt treatment helps relief. Till have no symptoms, you can carry on norml healthy life style matching your age. If you any of the above mentioned symptoms... doctor may restrict some exercises. Thanks
