Is Masturbation A Safe Practice?

Respected Ma am, I am a 26 year old woman, single and I have been masturbating from when I was 21. Not a regular doer, but just before and after I have my periods (almost every time, I know the hormones are high). Rarely accompanied with porn. I find masturbating very relaxing and good. But being a catholic, I find it hard sometimes to cope with the guilt of masturbating. I have never been a fan of marriage, so my parents don t push me and I don t intend to get married soon and settle. I have never shared this with anybody and this would be the first time I m writing in to know. I just wanted to know if masturbation is alright. I was a student in Sacred Heart s and Sr. Anunciata from Respect for Life India, has been an inspiration for me all my life, and I have led my life always following right, except for this one. I have never had boyfriends (but have been social with all) and I have said NO to things I know are wrong. I am sometimes able to control it, but would like to eventually stop. Should I stop it or will this be okay. Please help me!

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

It is nice to know that you are very practical about your sexual thoughts. Masturbation is a form of self pleasure in all adults and women are increasingly indulging in such practices due to social advancement. It is perfectly normal to do masturbation the way mentioned by you and you may continue to do it. Various religions have strict views about masturbation because it is felt that sexual behavior is a slowly progressive natural instinct and masturbation can lead to risky sex among the youth later on. If you have control over yourself and firmly follow what is right and stay away from any type of risky sexual behavior like intercourse unless in a stable relationship, then there is no need to worry.
