Is Liver Cancer Possible With Normal Blood Work?

HI Doctor, My husband is scheduled for an MRI as they want to check on a mass found in the liver. My husband s blood work came out normal, but an ultrasound discovered a mass. Is it possible to have normal blood work and still have liver cancer? Thank you, Vanessa.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Yes it is possible to have a normal liver in patient with liver cancer. But detection of mass in liver does not always mean that it will be cancer. It could be anything from simple cyst, hemangioma, hydatid cyst, adenoma or cancer. Confirmation of nature of cancer can only be confirmed by biopsy of mass and histopathological examination of tissue. Liver function may be normal in early stage of cancer.
Advice
1.     Get done MRI as suggested by your doctor
2.     Investigations
a.     CT/USG guided liver biopsy
b.     Serum bilirubin
c.     SGPT/SGOT
d.     Alkaline phosphatase

Thanks
