Is It True That Removal Of Cervix Will Cause Less Bleeding?

I am scheduled for an abdominal hysterectomy next month due to a massive 20cm fibroid I am unclear about the removal of my cervix. My gynaecologist wants to remove it because it will be a less complicated procedure. I am a Jehovah s Witness and need the op without use of blood transfusion. Is it true that removal of cervix will cause less bleeding?

Hello and welcome,

I understand your problem.
The removal or non removal of the cervix and the difficulty involved in doing it depend upon the size and location of fibroid.

In most cases, removal does not result in excess bleeding. Removing the cervix is the last part and most of the complicated procedure is usually over by the time the cervix is reached. Another issue is blood transfusion: Since the fibroid is big, one cannot say that you will not need a transfusion. It may be life saving at times. You can ask for autologous transfusion if it is allowed by your beliefs. Here your own blood will be collected a few days before the surgery. It will be stored and used for you at the time of surgery if needed.

I completely understand the situation. The non removal of cervix may not be a major factor in preventing a transfusion. Please discuss these issues with your doctor and then go for surgery.

All my god wishes are with you.
Hope this satisfies your query.
