Is It To Be Concerned About Deficiency Of G6PD In Child?

Hi, I am from India. My 6-month old son is G6PD deficient. This deficiency was first detected when he was just 10 days old. At that time the observed value was 0.5 U/g Hb (reference range 4.6 – 13.5). The same test (UV Kinetic) was repeated after 6 months. This time the observed value is 0.16 U/g Hb. I want of know if this is a severe, moderate, or mild G6PD deficiency? If this is a case of severe deficiency, then what precautions we must take? The baby’s blood group is O positive. The following additional tests were done recently – Serum Bilirubin Total – observed value 2.14 (reference range 0.2 – 1.2) Reticulocyte count – observed value 1.1% (reference range for new born 2.0 – 6.0%) Haemoglobin – observed value 11.2 (reference range 11.1 – 14.1)

hi,sorry to hear about your son.the g6pd deficiency usually causes hemolytic anemia resulting in anemia and jaundice and splenomegaly.considering the above values, it seems to be a moderate to severe disease.i would suggest you better take the child to a pediatric hematologist because the disease will become more severe after infancy or when the child gets viral infection or allergy to drugs.early treatement with an expert prevent problems.good day
