Is It Safe To Use Gabapentin And Nortriptyline For Burning Sensation In Foot?

Hi ,I have been taking Gabapentin 350 mg for 5 months. Prior to this taking 350 mg 3x per day.Currently also taking neurotryptiline 50 mg, and Nabumetone 750 mg 2x per day.Taking all meds to manage aggressive burning / nerve pain in my foot due to low back issues. We have started decreasing dose of Gabapentin from 350 mg to 200 mg for 1 week, and now down to 100 mg. Is it possible that this could be causing depression or low mood? Have felt very emotional & down and wondered if can be effect of the medication? I was experiencing anxiety with higher dose, and this is already much better. Appreciate any input you can offer.

Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. Gabapentin is a GABA drug and the drug is used in a number of pain conditions and is very effective drug for pain. The drug is a safe drug and though it doesn't cause dependence but it is known to cause withdrawal effects if its doses are reduced rapidly or stopped abruptly. Your doses have been reduced rapidly and this is the reason you are having depression and low mood. Restlessness, anxiety, insomnia are common symptoms of withdrawal. In normal cases doses should be reduced gradually over at least 4-6 weeks to prevent withdrawal. If symptoms persist then consult your doctor for treatment.

Thanks, Hope this helps you. Take care
