Is It Safe To Use Erythromycin Drops For Damaged Ear Drum Leading To Pain?

Good afternoon Dr.My husband had ear drum burst two days ago. We went to ER d/t severe pain. I requested Erythromycin ear drops, which on subsequent visit to ENT, specialist thought is was a great idea. I just noticed, prescription at hand is OPHTALMIC TOBRAMYCIN 0.3%. Pharmacy filled out according to what I can see, was the ARNP s Rx at ER. I just called Wallgreen s and they said that is fine to use on ear. What is your opinion, please? I m a nurse and I was trained not to confuse otic with ophthalmic. Thank you for your reply,Maria

Hello, greetings! Thanks for the query. It is all right to use opthalmic eye drops in the ear. Usually, antibiotic drops made for eyes can be used in the ears and sometimes they are even labelled as eye/ear drops.
