Is It Safe To Take Robitussin For Cough In Case Of G6PD Deficiency?

my son is diagnosed with G6PD deficiency, since 6 months old. I ve tried to avoid all avoidable medication and foods. He has be extremely healthy, hardly falling sick. Now, he is 19 y/o in college, coughing and self medicating with Robitussin. is this safe for him?

Hello dear, thanks for your question on HCM.
I can understand your situation and problem.
Robitussin is having codeine and guaifenesin.
Both of these drugs are safe in G6PD deficiency patients. They have no effect on red blood cells (RBCs), so no harm in giving to your son.
If he is not improving with this syrup then better to consult doctor and get done
1. Clinical examination of respiratory system.
2. Chest x ray.
These are needed to rule out lung infection.
So no need to worry for robitussin. It is safe in G6PD deficiency patients.
