Is It Safe To Take Duphaston To Stop Heavy Menstrual Bleeding?

Hello Dr, i was diagnosed with DCIS 3 months ago. I had a mastectomy and im battling with heavy bleeding and periond pains. My gynaegologist prescribed Duphaston tablet for the next two months 10 days each month before doing the procedure of removing the fibroids in my uterus . Is it safe fo me to take this mediacation as a breast cancer high risk person? What is the alternative? Regards, Tebogo

Hi,
I understand your concern.
Duphaston is useful for controlling excessive bleeding in periods/regulating bleeding on long run.
But, it is contraindicated in breast cancer that are progesreron dependent malignancies.
I would suggest to consult your surgeon who treated you for DCIS & get a clear instruction about taking Duphaston ( Usually tumors are tested for it's hormone dependency after operation) / give your gynecologist clear idea about your surgery for DCIS- show all the reports & confirm about regestrone intake.
The alternative for reducing the bleeding are
Focused endometrial ablasion,
uterine artery embolisation-( which can also be used to shink the fibroids)- which are to be selected according to patients condition by treating doctor.
Thanks.
