Is It Safe To Take Dulcolax With Lactulose?

Hello, wondered if you could help? I have had a total knee replacement from which I came out of hospital yesterday. Since the morning of Friday 1st July ( I went into hospital on 1st July) I have been unable to have any bowel movements. I have 2sachets of movicol, 3senna, 5doses of lactulose and still nothing. I tend to think ducalax always helps but wondered if it s safe to take with lactulose? Any suggestions as I m feeling sick and in pain, thanks for your help, XXXX

Hello,

I think you are suffering the side effects of analgesics used in hospital for your total knee replacement surgery (especially when it comes to opioids). Due to their effect, the bowels become lazy ending up in no bowel movement.

Dulcolax does contain lactulose, so it is the same thing. You can use rectal enema to help. Increase fluids intake. Continue taking Movicol or Dulcolax. Laxatives and fiber rich supplements such as Psyllium/Fig, can also help. But enema is important to use.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Wish you the best recovery.

Regards,
