Is it safe to take Calcium Citrate for osteopenia?

I need to increase my calcium intake as I have osteopenia. I have been taking calcium with magnesium and zinc for a long time, but I have read that calcium citrate is better to take, so I bought a bottle today and started taking it to help with my bones. 500 mg. two tablets per day. My question is: is it safe to take calcium citrate and will it help strengthening my bones?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Calcium citrate is one of the calcium supplements used to to prevent or reverse osteopenia. Yes, it is safe to take this supplement, it is absorbed easily and can be taken with or without food. You can continue taking one tablet daily and also eat foods that contain calcium (milk, cheese, yogurt, salmon or sardines, spinach, beans and lentils, etc ). You can try to prevent from taking in more calcium than you need because it may cause problems (constipation, hypercalcemia ,calcium buildup in soft tissues).

Hope I have answered your query.

Since 2002 I have been taking various forms of bone building medicines, for short durations. Evista, actonel, cacirol with calcium nasal sprays, gemcal and salmoncal. I have now been advised to take fosavance once a week. I am 67 years old and have osteoporosis in my spine, and osteopenia elsewhere. Please advise

I am suffering constant muscle and bone pain and also noticed I am losing muscle mass. I was diagnosed with ostopenia a few months ago. I was not given any medication , the Dr. only suggested to take a dose of 1200 mg of calcium. Could this be a different illness? should I see a specialist?

Just found out today that I have Osteopenia (had dexa scan Wed.). My mother has osteoporosis, and my younger sister has ostepenia. The dr. prescribed Atelvia (which I m not going to take because of the price). I am going to start Calcium (1200 - 1800 mg + D3) it s Kirkland brand. I m concerned about any prescription - my sister cannot take tolerate what she was prescribed - made her very sick. Besides diet high in calcium and protein, is there anything else I can do other than starting prescription meds. I believe my left hip was 2.? and my right hip 1.? - she is mailing the report to me. I am 66 years old, 5 1/2 , and weight 132. I walk, play golf, work part time at a job that I m NOT sitting. I don t smoke, but do enjoy a glass of 2 of wine in the evening. Any thoughts or suggestions. Thank you.
