Is It Safe To Masturbate With Vaginal Infection?

Hi, I am a 22 year old female. About 2-3 weeks ago, I used the clindamycin phosphate vaginal cream to treat what my doctor thought was bv. My ob/gyn found some yeast on my culture, so I took the flucanazole tablet about a week ago. I have no burning, itching, or irritation-just some mild discharge. I am wondering if it is safe to masturbate (clitoral stimulation-no insertion), or will this aggravate/worsen/or reinstate my symptoms?

Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

As your infections were treated fully and you have no symptoms, any form of sexual activity, whether it be with a partner or alone, should not make your symptoms come back. Topical stimulation of your clitoris in particular has no bearing on the likelihood of getting an infection because it is on the outside.

Good hygiene methods to reduce the chances of getting vaginal infections in general include:

Wash your hands (this should be true for a partner as well) before touching the genital area or any sexual contact.

Shower or bathe daily and wash the external genitals with mild soap and water- preferably without any dyes or perfumes. Do not wash inside your vagina with anything, including water.

Wear loose-fitting cotton underwear and avoid tight clothes especially in the summertime. Panty shields actually increase the risk of vaginal infections by trapping sweat next to the body.

If your clitoris gets irritated, use over-the-counter hydrocortisone 1% cream twice daily to reduce irritation.

So in summary- it is safe to resume sexual activity and/or masturbation after treating your vaginal infections.

I hope I was able to adequately answer your question today, and that my advice was helpful.

Best wishes,

Dr. Brown
