Is It Safe To Have Unprotected Sex After Menstruation?

Hi, I started using althea last month during the 1st day of my period then I had unprotected sex after taking 19th pill. I got my period on the 5th day of the 7day pill free. Since I already finished the 1st pack and I got my period am I already safe to have unprotected sex as long as I am taking the pill religiously? Thanks for your answers in advance!

Hello,
Thanks for sharing your health concern with us. It is advisable to use additional contraception for the first couple of months of using the hormone contraception in order to avoid failure. Though you successfully completed one month course, I would ask you to take precautions for another month. You can have regular unprotected sexual intercourse thereafter. Though protection is offered when the oral contraceptive pill is regularly taken right from the first week onward, stray ovulation should be kept in mind and no chances should be taken. Hope your query has been answered. Take care.

OBGYN Dr. Shanti Vennam's  Response
Hello,

The first 2-3 cycles are considered less protected and additional protection like a barrier method is usually suggested. This is because the body needs time to adjust to the altered hormone milieu created by the use of hormone contraception. You seem to have entered protected phase early enough. However, I would ask you to go for additional protection for a couple of cycles to avoid risk.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shanti Vennam, OBGYN
