Dear Dr. Grief, My son is 26 yrs. old and will soon graduate from Law School. It has been his dream to serve in the Armed Forces. He is currently applying to the National Guard. However, he has a history of Hereditary Spherocytosis. He was diagnosed at 16 yrs. old and had a laparoscopic procedure to remove his spleen and gallbladder. He has no anemia or other medical issues. His recruiter does not know if this medical history will disqualify him from military service. I would appreciate your medical opinion. Thank you!
